Smart Communities

This panel discussion will focus on the Smart Communities concept and how its application can help communities position themselves to take full advantage of the rapidly evolving digital economy. Panellists will discuss what a Smart Community strategy can do for communities, cities, individuals and businesses, and what this means for Canada’s digital future.


Sri Elaprolu

Global Lead & Senior Manager, Public Sector IoT, Amazon Web Services

Sri Elaprolu serves as a Global Lead and Senior Manager on the AWS Public Sector team and is responsible for their IoT practice. Sri and his team work closely with customers, solution providers, and systems integrators across multiple countries, and assist them in leveraging AWS to build scalable, secure, and cost effective IoT solutions.

Sri has been with Amazon for 4.5yrs. Prior to his current role, Sri led the Solutions Architecture team at AWS focusing on Education and State and Local Govt. customers in the U.S. He specializes in areas such as designing highly scalable distributed solutions, security, and compliance. Prior to joining AWS, Sri led multiple product teams at Northrop Grumman Corp and helped deliver a number of enterprise solutions to U.S. Federal Agencies and Education customers.

Sri has over 20 years of IT industry experience. He has a Masters degree in Engineering Science, and an MBA in General Management.

Jan Harder

Councillor, City of Ottawa

Having spent over 20 years serving the residents of Barrhaven as their municipal representative Jan Harder often states that for the majority of her life she has been, and continues to be, employed in the customer service industry.

Jan was a successful business professional prior to being elected in 1997 to the former City of Nepean council, and is now a recognized leader on council who has been proud to call Barrhaven home for over 30 years.

Jan has become known as a community builder and champion and has helped Barrhaven and Ottawa grow by working with local and national business leaders as well as City staff to secure the necessary infrastructure to support such growth. Jan believes the best way to build Ottawa is to balance growth while maintaining a high quality of life.

Byron Holland

President and CEO, CIRA

Byron Holland is the president and CEO of the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).  Under his leadership CIRA is at the forefront of innovation. With over 2.5 million domain names under management, .CA continues to be one of the fastest growing country code top-level domains in the world.  CIRA is committed to building a better online Canada, with investments in projects and initiatives that make the Internet stronger, safer and more accessible in Canada and globally.

Byron is a frequent commenter on Internet policy and technical issues in the Canadian media and an active member of global Internet governance. He holds leadership positions within the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a not-for-profit organization with participants from around the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable.  He is the vice-chair of ICANN’s Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) and chair of ICANN’s Customer Standing Committee (CSC). Byron also participates in the United Nations coordinated Internet Governance Forum and is on the advisory group for the second Global Internet and Jurisdiction Conference, which will be held in Ottawa in 2018.

Byron holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from Queen’s University. He also holds his ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Dan Mathieson

Mayor, City of Stratford

Dan Mathieson is in his fourth term as Mayor of the City of Stratford and has sat on municipal council since 1995.  During his tenure Dan has been a member on numerous Boards and Committees in healthcare, municipal affairs, law enforcement, athletics, not-for-profits, universities and colleges.

He is currently Chair of the Ontario Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), Chair of Kings University College at Western University, Chair of the Stratford Police Services Board, a member of the Board of Directors of Festival Hydro and Rhyzome Networks and the Advisory Board of the University of Waterloo-Stratford Campus.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Guelph and a Masters of Public Administration Degree from the University of Western Ontario.
