Digital awareness: Cybersecurity & privacy

With the adoption of technology in almost every aspect of our lives, we are putting ourselves at risk in one way or another. Whether it is the information we share on social media, the tracking of our online habits or the use of connected-home devices such as Google Home or Amazon Echo, the adoption of internet-based tools and services results in the collection and retention of personal data. If this data is not being managed safely and securely, it is vulnerable to bad actors.

Knowledge and education are vital to finding the right balance between the freedom to share information and enjoying the benefits of technology, and protecting our information and online safety. As digital citizens, it is important for us to understand cybersecurity and how to protect ourselves online.

About Nicole

Nicole Verkindt is passionate about leveraging the talents of entrepreneurs. The founder of OMX (Offset Market Exchange) and a Dragon on CBC’s Next Gen Den, she believes in the role of entrepreneurs to grow the economy and help solve global issues.

Nicole launched OMX in 2012, when she was only 27 years old. The online platform is the only one in the world to manage obligations government contractors have to invest in local economies, a policy called “offsets”. The platform is a powerful online marketplace with users from the world’s top defence, aerospace, shipbuilding sectors, and tens of thousands of local suppliers around the world, and also generates data analytics to help governments understand economic impacts of procurement decisions.

Nicole was named "Canada's 2017 Woman Entrepreneur of the Year" by Startup Canada.
