In 2014, CIRA launched a new service: D-Zone Anycast DNS, which helps Canadian organizations in several ways:
- To mitigate the impact of malicious attacks on their DNS infrastructure.
- To offload the DNS to a dedicated and professionally managed service and keep it off other critical network resources.
- To improve speed.
- To improve system-wide resilience.
There is an all-important fifth reason for D-Zone – Canada was underserved at the DNS-layer of the Internet’s technology stack and we were well behind many other similar countries.
We’ve recently hit an exciting milestone of managing 10,000 zones, with D-Zone being adopted by organizations and businesses across Canada.
10,000 is a good number, but it is just a start
In addition to expanding the number of zones, our goal includes bringing the DNS home with a service that is not only better than the options but priced competitively for Canadian organizations – whether they have a .CA, .com, .net or one of the new gTLDs. It is also to improve on traditional unicast architectures that are being used with a significantly better infrastructure.
D-Zone is a secondary Anycast DNS service that has a global footprint and an unparalleled presence inside Canada and close to Canadian population hubs. This secondary DNS service is an important piece of an IT managers’ toolkit and features two anycast clouds comprised of 12 nodes peered to a global network of Internet exchange points (IXPs).
For businesses in Canada, nobody can deliver the same speed as D-Zone
D-Zone has 8 nodes running in Canada with four additional nodes around the globe peered at exchanges that allow almost instant growth in the footprint (though technology called IX Reach). Each node is built with fully redundant, load-balanced, state-of-the-art equipment to improve capacity, latency, security and up-time. Each node also peers to large exchange points and has its own transit. In other words, there are layers upon layers of system-wide redundancy.
10,000 zones have been protected with D-Zone, adopted by clients ranging from municipalities like the City of Hamilton to research networks like Cybera (the organization managing Alberta’s ultra-high-speed advanced research network). While these types of organizations are a natural fit for a Canadian DNS we are also helping smaller IT departments directly and through our ever growing list of hosting company partners such as Webnames, Web Hosting Canada, Korax, EasyDNS, TreeFrog, and others.
