At CIRA, we love opening gifts. We also love giving them.

Every year, CIRA provides over $1 million in grants to Canadian not-for-profits, charities and academic institutions doing good things for and through the internet. CIRA’s Community Investment Program funds innovative internet-related projects that build a stronger, safer and more accessible Canadian internet. Now in its sixth year, this program has provided $5.45 million in grants to date.

There are many organizations doing impressive work to build a better online Canada, but what exactly are the needs? According to a report CIRA released in June 2018, which reflected the experiences of organizations on the front lines of Canada’s internet, some areas include:

  • Investments to extend Canadian internet infrastructure, particularly in connecting rural, remote and Indigenous communities.
  • Getting more Canadians online – especially marginalized or vulnerable individuals often left out of Canada’s digital economy.
  • Building digital literacy among all Canadians to use the internet safely and securely, including seniors, new Canadians, Indigenous peoples and people living in poverty.

Get inspired by any of the 130 projects we’ve funded already! If your organization has a digital project that will help build a better online Canada, apply for a Community Investment Program grant at www.cira.ca/cip between January 15 and February 28, 2019.

Perhaps in 2019, CIRA will have a gift for you to open too!
