We’re a dynamic team dedicated to building a better online Canada. Learn why employees are proud to call CIRA their workplace.

Today the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers announced the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) as a top employer in the National Capital Region.

You may know us from our role in managing .CA or the bright red .CA sign featured on the outside of our building at Lansdowne Park in the Glebe. Behind that sign, is a dynamic, innovative team and there’s a reason we attract some of Ottawa’s top tech talent.

Here are a few ways we stand out, and some of the reasons employees are proud to call CIRA their workplace.

1. We are dedicated to shaping the Canadian internet.

Our purpose is to build a better online Canada and ensure Canada’s internet is safe and secure. CIRA’s D-Zone DNS Firewall is now in schools across Saskatchewan, protecting thousands of kids there from online threats. CIRA’s cybersecurity services are also protecting Canadians in universities, hospitals and municipalities as well.

We’re proud of our role in managing the .CA registry on behalf of Canadians and our great team behind it. Our marketing team recently won a platinum Summit International Award for our Choose Canada campaign. (Why choose .CA? Because it’s as Canadian as poutine!)

In 2018, we also hit a milestone—there are now more than 2.8 million .CA domain names under management!

2. We give back.

Every year, CIRA’s Community Investment Program funds over $1 million in projects across Canada doing good for and through the internet. Five staff members shared their favourite projects and why they’re proud of the program in a blog. The program is all about our strategic goal, building a better online Canada. This year our staff got excited and creative in spreading the word about the grants application period. (who doesn’t love some good photo props!)

3. We are building connections around the country, and the world.

We bring together Canadians and top digital thinkers at events throughout the year for CIRA members and participation in conferences like the Canadian Internet Governance Forum.

CIRA has been an advocate and financial supporter of Internet Exchange Points (IXP), hubs where independent networks can interconnect directly to one another. CIRA is currently working on implementing an IXP in Iqaluit and our CTO Jacques Latour wrote about why Canada’s north deserves better internet.

CIRA is also a global leader in internet governance. We represent Canada at discussions around the world in the internet industry, like ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers that brings together country code top level domains like .CA, and CENTR, the association of European country code top-level domain name registries. CIRA staff are thought leaders on Canadian internet and cybersecurity and often present at conferences and events across the country.

We’re excited about being recognized as a top Ottawa employer and have been working this year to articulate who we are and our culture. CIRA recently introduced our employee value proposition (EVP), a promise from employer to employee that sums up who we are:

We are driven by purpose. We build connections. We thrive together with candour and accountability.
