THE PROJECT

Chebucto Community Net is a volunteer-run, member-based ISP that provides internet access to community social housing in Halifax, giving low-income members of the community an affordable option for vital internet access. CIRA funded equipment to build a network to connect two manors to high-speed internet.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

With the expensive fees of larger ISPs meaning internet service was previously out of reach, the 270 residents of the manors, primarily seniors, were thrilled by the new connectivity, especially because no new hardware was required in order to connect. Chebucto also offered training sessions for residents to help them get online. By  enabling affordable non-profit internet access for low-income public housing residents, this project helped bridge the digital divide when it comes to equitable internet access faced by underserved communities across Canada.
