THE PROJECT

Science World’s mission is to empower children in BC to be inspired by science and for educators to be equipped to cultivate that interest. This includes robust digital literacy – but there is a serious lack of resources available for children in BC and their teachers to learn these skills. Science World used funding from CIRA to develop and deliver Tech-Up 3.0, a free series of digital skills workshops for students in grades K-12 across the province, on topics such as AI, machine learning, coding, modeling and robotics.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

The project was a huge hit, with 788 workshops reaching more than 19,000 students, including children in Indigenous, rural, and remote communities. 86% of participants expressed that the workshops had increased their interest in learning more about coding and other digital skills, while 83% of teachers who attended training felt significantly more comfortable bringing digital skills lessons into the classroom.
