THE PROJECT
LifeCycles’s mission is to build a resilient food system in Greater Victoria by growing, harvesting, and sharing food. The Gleaning Hub is a tool for storing information about fruit trees, self-scheduling of tree assessments and picking, and tracking harvest data.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
This project developed innovative ways to use the Gleaning Hub as a tool for coordinating harvesting activities among growers, and simplified and enhanced the organization’s self-scheduling system that enables tree owners to predict when trees need to be harvested and engages volunteers in picking. It allowed the organizers to facilitate the rescuing of nearly 90,000 lbs of fruit in the harvest year, distributing fruit that would otherwise go to waste to those in the community who will use it.
