The Internet is one of the greatest drivers of positive economic and social change the world has seen in centuries. Domain names are at the core of the Internet’s operation. Explore the history of the domain name industry with this interactive timeline.
With more than 2.3 million .CA domain names registered, .CA is one of the fastest growing top-level domains in the world.
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) manages the .CA top-level domain, supports the development of Canada’s Internet community, and represents the .CA registry internationally.
Welcome to the fourth .CA Factbook, our annual look at the global Internet and Canada’s performance against some important indicators. Each year we publish this report as a resource for Canadians to help them understand the Internet and Canada’s place in our global networked society.
This has been an important year for the domain industry and the Internet overall. The entry of new top-level domains to the domain system has created new options for website owners and new competition for country code top-level domains like .CA.
The ways we engage with the Internet are also changing. Mobile technology is playing an increasing role in all our lives – and especially the lives of young people and those accessing the Internet in the developing world.
Our intent with the Factbook is to present credible data from .CA and outside sources in an easy-to-reference format. There are also some important calls to action that surface from this year’s Factbook, such as the persistent digital divides between developed and developing countries, and urban and rural centres in Canada. Our research shows Canadians are, for the most part, satisfied with their level of Internet service and continue to be among the most advanced Internet users globally.
The powerful role the Internet plays in the global economy and in society makes it an interesting and humbling time to manage the .CA domain. I hope you will find this year’s edition of the Factbook both motivating and informative.
