THE PROJECT

Coastal First Nations is an alliance of eight Nations located throughout the Great Bear Rainforest Region in the Central, North Coast and Haida Gwaii that is building a strong conservation-based and sustainable economy for the next 7 Generations. As with many First Nations across the country, a lack of connectivity has excluded CFN from participating in the digital economy. CIRA funding provided last mile connectivity for four community-owned ISPs.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

They hired a Project Manager to oversee upgrades and develop a Central/North Coast Community ISP Strategy to expand services, identify technology training needs and devise ways for Nations to have better data control and sovereignty. Over 6,000 First Nations people are benefitting from last mile readiness, reducing barriers to accessing remote work, education, healthcare and online services.
