“A .CA domain identifies us with being proudly Canadian without us even having to say it. .CA has kind of an iconic quality to it. It’s kind of like throwing the maple leaf on your backpack.”

Why choose a .CA domain name for your website?

How to choose a trusted .CA Registrar

A Registrar is an online retailer where you can buy your .CA domain name and related services

While we manage the .CA domain name registry on behalf of Canada, .CA domain names are actually registered through online retailers called Registrars. When you search for a .CA domain name on our website, we provide a list of our trusted, certified Registrars. If you're new to the world of domain names, you might not know where to start. Here's our advice on how to choose the right Registrar for you.

  1. Understand your unique needs

What are the services that you require for your domain name? If you're interested in additional services like email hosting or if you require French support, ensure that the Registrar you choose supports those needs.

  2. Shop around

Not all Registrars are the same. Make sure you shop around and compare their services, customer support, additional features, pricing, and policies. Your Registrar will be your main point of contact for the registration and management of your .CA domain name, so make sure you choose the right one for you.

  3. Check references

Seek out customer reviews and tetimonials, and ask friends or colleagues for a recommendation.

All of our Registrars are trusted and accredited by CIRA and must go through a recertification process every year. No matter which Registrar you choose, trust that you are in good hands.

Changing Registrars

You can transfer a .CA domain name to another Registrar. This is useful if you find a Registrar is not meeting your needs or if you would like to manage all of your domain names through one Registrar company. Note that transfers are not possible during the 60 day lock applied to new .CA domain name registrations.

To transfer a domain name, contact your current Registrar and request the release of all locks applied to your domain name and for the authorization code or EPP code assigned to your domain name. This code helps identify your domain name and is required for transfers. It must be provided within five days of your request. Should you not receive the code within five calendar days, you can escalate requests through CIRA by emailing with "Authorization Code Request" as the subject field.

Once you receive your Authorization code, contact your new Registrar and process the transfer with them. When you transfer a domain name, the registration period is automatically extended by one year.

Individual Registrars will be able to provide more information on the transfer process. Contact your current Registrar’s customer service department for personalized instructions and information.

Who can Register a .CA Domain?

The .CA domain is reserved for individuals and organizations with a Canadian connection. Once you register a domain name, we will be in touch to ensure you meet CIRA’s Canadian presence requirements. CIRA will only use your documentation to validate your compliance, and your information will be destroyed within 60 days of confirming your compliance. If you have any questions about our compliance program, please visit our compliance section or contact support at

Registering a .CA with French characters and accents

The .CA domain registry supports French accents and characters within domain names. All .CA domain names can be spelled with the French language’s full range of characters and ligatures: é, ë, ê, è, â, à, æ, ô, œ, ù, û, ü, ç, î, ï, ÿ.

Accented and non-accented versions of web addresses are variants of each other and referred to as an administrative bundle. For example, ç and cirà.ca are variants of the web address, and together form an administrative bundle. All variations in an administrative bundle are reserved only for you and cannot be registered by anyone else.

Please note not all Registrars offer French accent support. When you search for your .CA domain name, check French-Accented Domain Name Registration box in the advanced services filter.
